Can you do wordpress web sites? I hear that question almost every time I visit a client or potential client. The answer is of course yes; we have been doing wordpress web sites now for over 5 year. So many businesses are learning of the flexibility and ease of use of WordPress as a content management system. So companies like mine are frequently asked, “Can you do a wordpress web site for my company?”

So whats the big deal. Why are so many developers using wordpress for the development of websites? Well, there is a demand for it, it is fairly easy to setup, there 100,000 plus plugins that do so many things and its even more convenient for a client to use to update their own web site. This reduces cost to the business that is having the web site developed because they can maintain the site without paying a monthly maintenance fee or an hourly rate for changes to their web site. This is great for the business. The problem is wordpress is not secure. The people that write the plugins are not security experts so your plugins are vulnerable and have to be updated all the time. WordPress itself has to be updated as well. And if you don’t have the correct version of wordpress with the correct plugin then your site can brake. This is a constant on-going battle that never stops. The first time you don’t have everything updated and secured you will incur the wrath of the hacking gods. You will get hacked, it is only a matter of time….so what can you do to prevent the inevitable.

Well, first never get a web site developed in wordpress for e-commerce, second if you decided to proceed with a wordpress web or a wordpress web site for e-commerce make sure you use a third party PCI compliant plug-in that will protect your customers information. Also make sure you are not liable for the transactions if a breach does occur. Next, make sure you have a web developer that has experienced in wordpress that understand the risk and the fact that plug-ins must be updated on weekly schedules and maintained for the safety of your web site. They should also make sure to install and properly configure the following plugins.  Failure to do so will result in your site being compromised at some point…guaranteed.

Here are some recommended plug-ins:
